One of the best library developer strikes again. This time we go back in time to a dark age of our history to resurrect sounds from that era.

by Alex Arsov, March 2019

Eduardo Tarilonte is the David Bowie of the sampling world. We don’t expect to get an ordinary, all-purpose library from him. As with all his work, this particular masterpiece is possibly even more special, unique and off-the-beaten-path. This library is a little darker than the other Era libraries by the same author, but I assume this is not the reason for its name. I think it comes from the fact that this library contains instruments from the so-called “Dark Ages” era in our history. Maybe Vikings and other Dark Ages nations didn’t play the same melodies as we do, but when we try to recreate music from that era, as I presume that we and Tarilonte more or less follow some sort of Hollywood interpretation of that time. At the end of the day, this is a media library where imagination is everything, and it seems that Tarilonte’s imagination wins again.

In general, Dark Era is more or less in line with other Era products, offering up even more mystical sounds, more immersed in some foggy mood. I especially like some of the evolving long notes that some of the instruments and voices can produce in this library. Dark Era has plenty of common elements with other Era libraries, nevertheless it still has its own, unique character.

Percussion and winds are my favorite here, but almost every section hides some real gems inside, so be sure to try out every preset that comes with Dark Era. Directories are sorted by sections, then come subdirectories and finally presets. Inside the presets there aren’t as many articulations as you might be used to with some other libraries, but those that are included and accessible through lower key-switches are carefully chosen, offering some interesting variations that are impossible to recreate with MIDI – mostly some thrills, unusual bands and similar playing techniques that make an instrument like this vivid and alive. Also, in many presets you’ll find green areas, MIDI loops that can be triggered by pressing any of those green keys. All MIDI files are available inside Dark Era.

Every preset comes with a decent number of controllers, so there will be no problem tweaking any instrument to your needs. The sound quality is top level, but this is far from being the main advantage of this library. The main point is the special spirit and personal character that many of the instruments have, offering some sort of individuality. Some of them even contain small imperfections that come along the key-range, giving things a bit more of a human feel, a personal and unique touch.

Dark Era is a big bag of interesting and inspirational instruments and soundscapes that come with many interesting loops and phrases.

The whole library is divided into three main categories: Instruments, Sound Design and Voices.

Instruments

Inside Instruments we find three main sections: Percussion, Strings and Winds.

There are around twenty different percussions, some of them coming in a few variations – actually different instruments from the same group either bigger, smaller, or with another type of wood etc. All the percussion has some tribal character, with a decent amount of reverb which can be disabled if you want to use your own. A few presets comes with MIDI loops that can be triggered through the lower green colored section on the keyboard, while some of them come with various small drum loops, spread out over the keyboard keys, all of them containing different sounding hits of the same percussion distributed over an octave or two. So, you have enough variations to allow you to avoid sounding unnatural with your drum works. I’ve already used older Era percussion in place of some others from different, large and well-known drum workstations simply because Era percussion sounds more alive with all those hit variations giving extra dynamics and clarity in the arrangement. So, by playing those different hits you can easily recreate a vivid, live performance. I’m not sure if anyone could recognize the end result as being a MIDI instrument played using keyboards.

The next section inside the Instrument part is Strings and Winds. Strings come as Bowed and Plucked, some of them have only essential articulations while others come with few different articulations accessible through key-switches. Plucked comes in a shape of three different Lyra instruments and one Lute, while Bowed brings two really exotic sounding instruments that produce similar results, as well as Hurdy Gurdy, being a bit different and sounding even more unusual.

In the wind section we find a few great flutes made from bones. I’m big fan of all flutes that Talironte has given us in previous years, and these ones are no exception. I know that this library is intended mainly for media, movie composers, but these flutes really fit everywhere. Whenever you need flutes with character, no matter which genre you are in, these could be right for you.

Of course, those small numbers of strings and winds are only the beginning, as every instrument comes with some variations. A small flute or string instrument, then a bigger one from the same family, and loops or strums in the case of Lyra, and presets with effects that are particularly interesting in the flute section. Also, flute loops come in different tempos… and so on and so forth. It is quite surprising how many different things you can find inside this library.

Sound Design

The next big section is called Sound Design. The first directory offers a fair number of epic loops. At least I thought so, as I was a bit disappointed that each preset carries almost identical sounds, just giving different rhythms. I excepted at least a few totally different drum sounds for these loops as the library brings an impressive section of percussion elements. Not that I’m complaining, but yes, I’m complaining. It is nice to have all those different rhythms, but next time please bring a little more sound diversity. Rhythmic Pads offers slightly better results in the diversity field, still not as much as expected. But the last directory called Soundscapes saves the day. Here we get some really interesting soundscapes if the kind that that Tarilonte is known for. Impressive and really different – more organic sounding soundscapes that stand out in a sea of all the other, mostly synthetic ones that can be found on most VST instruments and libraries.

Voices

The third and last section contains various human voices. Some of them are purely rhythmical, some bring throat singing, and there is even one preset with overtone singing. Of course there are also the well-known Tarilonte’s specialities – shouts and whispers and shamanic invocations. Those are all very raw and mystical sounding, unusual but still very usable, handy for all sort of genres and musical needs. I have already abused some of them in my non-media projects, as these voices can serve as unusual effects in any arrangement. Furthermore, if you put them through effects from your DAW, you can easily get some out-of-this-world results.

If you are part of any media, movie or game music business, then you already know what to expect from Tarilonte’s libraries. This one is no exception. As always, great sounding instruments, fantastic voices and very unique soundscapes. If you need to recreate any dark-age atmosphere then this one is indispensible. This library has loads of interesting instruments and sounds that can also be used in modern day arrangements. As I said at the beginning, it’s unique and sounds great. It is so obvious that the author of this library has a great passion for all kinds of mystical and magical eras of history, and as a result, this library is a splendid storyteller, carrying its own personal voice and character.
